A Russian town in the arctic circle has broken the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in the region. The town of Verkhoyansk in Russia reached 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius in June 2020. According to the United Nations, that’s about 17 degrees celsius warmer than normal for the arctic circle in June. The record-breaking temperature was discovered by French meteorologist Etienne Kapikian. This temperature rise isn’t new for the area, temperatures have been warmer than usual in Siberia for over 6 months. Worryingly, the arctic is one of the fastest-warming areas on earth and a hotter arctic makes warm weather worse. Big ice sheets reflect energy from the sun back into space helping to cool the planet but these ice sheets are melting. Siberia has been 13 degrees Fahrenheit or 7 degrees Celsius above its average temperature in 2020. It’s believed that 2 degrees Celsius of this has been caused by global warming.
