'Murder Hornets' Have Entered The US For The First Time

00:01:30

Asian hornets have been spotted in Washington state and efforts are underway to stop them from spreading. The hornets which started trending online as ‘murder hornets’ have orange and black markings and are nearly 2 inches in length. Their stingers are a quarter-inch long and can pierce through protective clothing worn by beekeepers. There have only been 2 confirmed sightings in the US and efforts are being made to stop them from spreading across the US. The hornets are native to East Asia and Japan. 30 to 50 people in Japan die every year from hornet stings. Most serious incidents occur when people come near or disturb their hive. Murder hornets are known for eating bees and researchers are worried as the bee population in the US is already in decline. Hundreds of traps are being set to find the queen and worker murder hornets. Their hives are underground and generate heat so researchers are trying heat-sensitive imaging technology to find them.
