An animal’s body size influences how loud the sound that they produce can be.However, some animals have found ways to make themselves sound bigger. The animals develop larger vocal organs that lower their pitch, making them sound bigger than they are.Researchers believe this could be a strategy animals use for sexual selection.Male animals with larger body sizes or 'superior singing skills' usually attract more females.Seals, dolphins, bats, and elephants are all capable of learning how to change their sound.Seals can imitate sounds and copy the calls of other seals who have successfully bred. The sound and body size of 164 different animals were analyzed. They ranged from mice and monkeys to seals and manatees. The results showed that animals who 'fake' their body size have excellent sound learning skills.Researchers believe this will provide scientists with a new way to investigate the 'evolution of communication systems'
