Penguin Poop Produces Extreme Amounts Of Laughing Gas

00:01:50

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen discovered that feces from king penguins emits a lot of laughing gas. Large amounts of laughing gas or nitrous oxide is released via their poop due to their diet. King penguins eat large amounts of fish and krill which contain a lot of nitrogen. Once the nitrogen is released via their poop, it’s turned into nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas. Nitrous oxide has a similar effect to the sedative used in a dentist’s office. After a few hours examining the penguins' feces, researchers felt sick and got a headache and in their words went “cuckoo”. After nosing about in guano for several hours, one goes completely cuckoo. One begins to feel ill and get a headache. The small nitrous oxide cylinders that you see lying in and floating around Copenhagen are no match for this heavy dose, Professor Bo Elberling, University of Copenhagen. Penguins produce high levels of nitrous oxide around their colonies. These emissions are 100 times higher than in a recently fertilized field. Researchers believe that knowledge of penguin droppings is very relevant in the fight against climate change. While nitrous oxide emissions, in this case, aren't enough to impact Earth's overall energy budget, our findings contribute to new knowledge about how penguin colonies affect the environment around them, Professor Bo Elberling, University of Copenhagen
