We’ve all been there - you start baking something delicious only to realize you don’t have one essential ingredient. Here are some substitutions you can make with things already in your home so you don’t have to go to the store. If you don’t have self-raising flour simply mix in half a tsp of baking powder and quarter tsp of salt per cup of plain flour. No milk? No problem! Evaporated milk can be used as a substitute just make sure to dilute with equal parts water. Non-dairy milk also work just as well as cows milk in recipes and you don’t even need to change the measurement. There are a number of different substitutes for butter but it’s important to pick one that will best suit what you’re baking. Applesauce, avocado, mashed banana, nut butter, and Greek yogurt can all be used with equal parts water instead of butter. One tbsp of vinegar mixed with one tsp of baking soda can be used as a replacement for eggs. If your recipe uses two eggs, simply double the amount of vinegar and baking soda.
