Facebook's New Name Has Unfortunate Translation In Hebrew

00:01:07

Hebrew speakers have pointed out on social media that Facebook’s new name Meta sounds like the Hebrew word for dead. According to the BBC, the word meta is “pronounced like the feminine form of the Hebrew word”. After the announcement, several people took to Twitter to point out the unfortunate coincidence. One Twitter user said that the "Jewish community will ridicule this name for years to come”. while another thanked the company for “providing all Hebrew speakers a good reason to laugh”. Another Twitter user said the new name “well describes what Facebook is today”. Facebook isn't the first company to be mocked over the translation of its branding. Companies such as KFC, Nokia, Rolls-Royce and Honda have all previously had issues with translations.
