Military-grade spyware targeting journalists, activists, and gov't officials worldwide

00:04:52

An investigation by a global media consortium alleges that military-grade malware from Israel-based NSO Group is being used to spy on journalists, human rights activists and political dissidents all over the world. From a list of more than 50,000 cellphone numbers obtained by Amnesty International and the Paris-based journalism nonprofit Forbidden Stories, journalists from 16 news organizations were able to identify more than 1,000 individuals in 50 countries who were allegedly selected by NSO clients for potential surveillance. Tom Davison, Senior Director for Lookout Mobile Security, points out that we "need to consider this as a weapon, it's a cyber weapon." And while everyday people are not being systematically targeted, Mr. Davison warns that "cybercriminals will be picking up on some of the techniques, they'll be picking up on some of the vulnerabilities that these companies (like NSO Group) are using to spread the malware." In order to protect ourselves, Mr. Davison reminds us that "we need to start thinking a bit differently about what we're actually carrying in our pocket ... we tend to forget that our smartphones are basically computers in our pockets."
