Swords in Rock - Sverd I Fjell - World's Greatest Monuments

00:00:59

In Stavanger, Norway stands the iconic Sverd I Fjell, known to the rest of the world as the Swords In Rock. Unsheathed by King Olav the 5th in 1983, this tribute honors the medieval Battle of Hafrsfjord - in which western Norway began unifying under one crown. Although unification of the land is said to have taken many centuries, Harald Fairhair is widely accepted as the first legitimate king of Norway and his reign lasted nearly six decades. A full millennium removed from the battle, the Haraldshaugen monument was unveiled in Haugesund, Norway in honor of the country's first king. Today, the Svahd-vi-fee-yehl Sverd i fjel serves as a popular destination for travellers in Norway. Fritz Røed's creation stands at ten meters and are to never be removed from its solid rock foundation. The swords symbolize peace and unity in a proud Norway.
