August 30, 1987 - Street Fighter hits the arcade, where players battle computer opponents as Ryu or Ken. Street Fighter 2 introduces player vs. player, and adds six new playable characters creating an entirely new genre. ‘M. Bison’ is changed to ‘Balrog’ in the United States. The game is released for Super Nintendo and Fei Long appears in Super Street Fighter 2, paying tribute to Bruce Lee. Van Damme plays the role of ‘Guile’ in the live-action film. By 1995, over 9.25 billion quarters have been spent on Street Fighter 2! Only Ryu and Ken return in Street Fighter 3 and Street Fighter 4 is released as a sequel to Street Fighter 2. Street Fighter V debuts, introducing a new mechanic, the V-Gauge! The Street Fighter franchise holds the Guinness World Record for “Most Prolific Fighting Game Series” and Street Fighter II was named one of the top 10 Best Arcade Games of all time.
