One Minute History. Ole Kirk Kristiansen starts a woodworking business in Billund, Denmark. The company re-names itself “LEGO” from the Danish word “Leg Godt” meaning “Play Well”. Inspired by Kiddicraft Building Bricks, the company buys a plastic injection molding machine, and makes “Automatic Binding Bricks”. The “Lego system of play” hits shelves before the company patents the original Lego Brick with stud and tube coupling. The wheel is invented, Duplo is created; and the first Lego theme park opens. Lego figures are born, but are still made of bricks. Lego Island is the first of many video games, the FIRST LEGO league forms and The Lego Movie is released. Lego makes over 300 million wheels per year, making them the world's largest manufacturer. Eighteen out of one million bricks fail quality control and there are over 400 billion lego bricks on earth; Enough to be stacked to the moon and back 10 times.
