Who was the Viking on 6th Avenue - One Minute History - Moondog

00:00:59

The War To End All Wars rages in the trenches when music maverick Louis T. Hardin, Jr. is born. Musically inclined, Louis builds his first drum set at age 5. Tragedy strikes at age 16, when an exploding dynamite cap renders him permanently blind. Undeterred, Louis continues his music education and settles in New York City. Homeless, he plays music on 6th Avenue where the legend of “Moondog” howls into existence. In full viking regalia, Moondog confounds passersby for three decades. Unbeknownst to them, this bizarre man receives recognition from prominent orchestras and composers. A fervent lover of Nordic and Germanic cultures, he moves to Germany where his artistry is more respected. He creates many instruments in his lifetime, chief among them is the ‘trimba’, symbolizing his love for percussion. Moondog passes in Munster, Germany, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspires countless musicians today.
