Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton - Women of History

00:00:59

Elizabeth Schuyler is born on August 9, 1757 in Albany to a wealthy Dutch family. A tomboy as a child, she grows into a strong-willed and impulsive woman and soon meets her future husband Alexander Hamilton. The two marry in less than a year and begin to start a family despite the ongoing American Revolution. She supports her husband in the early years of the American Republic; assisting with the Federalist Papers, the defense of the Bank of the United States and Washington’s Farewell Address. Eliza stands by her husband when his infidelity is revealed in the Reynolds Pamphlet. After her eldest son and husband are both killed in duels, she founds the Orphan Asylum Society, the first private orphanage in New York City, known today as Graham Windham. In 1854, Eliza dies at the age of 97, having dedicated 42 years of her life to an organization that continues to provide services to children and families more than 200 years later.
