00:00:59

Following the defeat of the Axis powers, American, British and Soviet intelligence agencies work diligently to recruit German rocket scientists and acquire their knowledge and designs. The United States hires Wernher von Braun and his engineering team; the developers of the V-2 rocket for the Nazis. In Berlin, the Soviets occupy the eastern part of Berlin, which includes the German rocket center, so Stalin sends Sergei Korolev and his best rocket engineers to salvage their research. August 29, 1949 - The Soviet Union enters the nuclear age, ending the United States monopoly on atomic weapons. The two superpowers engage in a conventional and nuclear arms race that spills over into the realm of spaceflight. When the U.S. announces plans to launch an earth-orbiting satellite, the Soviets declare their intent to launch their own satellites. The Space Race has begun.
