Mount Everest - Statistical Gist

00:00:59

Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain at 29,019 feet above seal level and it continues to grow in height by 4 millimeters every year. For hundreds of years, the Nepalese called it Sagarmatha and the Chinese called it Chomolungma before it got the name Everest in 1865. Everest is a graveyard, containing the remains of nearly 200 climbers. Everest is also a junkyard, with over 50 tons of waste littering the mountain. New rules require climbers to bring down 18 pounds of waste or lose a $4,000 deposit. The first successful summit of Everest was in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. But, many mountaineers believe that George Mallory and Andrew Irvine may have reached the summit in 1924, before disappearing on the mountain. Mallory’s body was discovered in 1999. If you want to reach the peak of Mount Everest it will cost anywhere from $35,000 to $200,000.
