The Last Stand of the Ned Kelly Gang - Famous Gangsters

00:00:59

June 25, 1880 - Australia - The Ned Kelly gang murders their former comrade Aaron Sherritt, who betrayed them to the police. After sabotaging train tracks nearby, they descend on Glenrowan, taking 62 prisoners in a local hotel. Drinks are served and games are played, while members of the gang dance to songs about their exploits in the Australian bush. At dawn, the law surrounds the hotel and the women and children are set free. In the early morning light, Ned Kelly, dressed in a long white overcoat and wearing metal armor, attacks the police from the rear. Unaffected by gunfire, the lawmen finally realize that his legs are unprotected. Kelly is shot six times and cries out, “I am done.” The male hostages are released before police set fire to the building, killing the last two outlaws. Convicted of murder, Kelly hangs on November 11, 1880. Today, Ned Kelly’s armor and its 19 bullet marks are on display at the State Library of Victoria.
