Bob Ross the Happy Painter - Epic Artist Series

00:00:59

1942 - Robert Norman Ross is born in Daytona Beach, Florida. As a child, he loses a finger in a wood-working accident. He joins the U.S. Air Force and becomes a drill sergeant where he spends so much time yelling that he never wants to yell again. While stationed in Alaska, the snow and mountains inspire him to develop a quick oil painting technique called alla prima or ‘wet on wet’; which he credits to William Alexander. The first episode of The Joy of Painting airs, showcasing Bob’s calm demeanor, furry creatures and happy catchphrases. Bob becomes known for his signature hair, which he doesn’t like. He keeps his hairdo for the sake of the Bob Ross brand. Bob dies on July 4,1995, having painted and donated almost all of his over 30,000 paintings. His legacy lives on at the Bob Ross workshop in Smyrna Beach, Florida, where happy little students can become certified Bob Ross instructors.
