Stanley Cup - The Story of Lord Stanley's Mug - One Minute History

00:00:59

Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley commissions a cup for the best amateur hockey team in Canada. Lord Stanley returns to England to become the 16th Earl of Derby before the first Stanley Cup is won by the Montreal Hockey Club. The Winnipeg Victorias begin the tradition of drinking champagne out of the cup. Lord Stanley’s Mug becomes the exclusive prize for the NHL champion, and Ted Lindsay is the first captain to hoist it; starting a superstition that only winners can touch the Cup. The original “Stovepipe” version is retired, and the players start a new tradition of spending a day with the cup. “The Holy Grail” bears the names of all winning players, coaches, management and staff for every season except for the NHL lockout, which leaves the words “season not played”. There are three cups; the original, a presentation cup and a replica at the Hall of Fame. The oldest trophy in professional sports and spends most of its time traveling the world.
