Memorial Day - For The Bravest Of All - Origins of National Holidays - One Minute History

00:00:59

Memorial Day traces its roots to the aftermath of the civil war when freed slaves created a new burial site for Union prisoners buried in a mass grave. General John Logan officially proclaims the first Decoration Day, celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery; some say the date was chosen because flowers are most likely to be in bloom. The poem “In Flander Fields” inspires Moina Michael to wear red poppies on Memorial Day leading the Veterans of Foreign Wars to sell ‘Buddy Poppies’. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act officially establishes Memorial Day, honoring those who died in service; different from Veteran’s Day, which honors all veterans. Congress designates a National Moment of Remembrance, asking Americans to observe a moment of silence or listen to ‘Taps’ at 3PM on Memorial Day. During this moment, more than 200 Amtrak trains blast their whistles and half a million baseball fans join in silence.
